On November 3, 2017, Sam Elliott delivered Lincoln Memorial University’s annual R. Gerald McMurtry Lecture presented by the Abraham Lincoln Institute for the Study of Leadership and Public Policy and the Duncan School of Law. The lecture was entitled, “‘You cannot get back … without some irregularity’: the 1865 Constitutional Amendments and the Return of Civil Government in Tennessee.” The presentation explored the fragility of constitutional civil government and the ultimate need for the law to be supported by the government’s monopoly of force, and was inspired by Sam’s research for his two most recent biographies of Isham G. Harris and John C. Brown.
